Dr. Tariq Haddad Featured on Fox 5 DC to Discuss Lipoprotein(a)
Over the weekend, Virginia Heart cardiologist and Director of Research, Dr. Tariq Haddad appeared on Fox 5 DC to discuss an important risk factor for heart disease: Lipoprotein(a), also known as Lp(a).
Lp(a) is a genetically determined form of cholesterol that is independent of traditional LDL cholesterol. Elevated levels of Lp(a) can significantly increase a person's risk of heart attack and stroke, even in individuals who otherwise appear healthy and have well-controlled cholesterol. Because Lp(a) is inherited, many people are unaware they have high levels unless they are specifically tested.
Virginia Heart is proud to be at the forefront of advancing care for patients with elevated Lp(a). We are currently enrolling in multiple late-stage clinical research studies evaluating new medications designed specifically to lower Lp(a) levels, an area where treatment options have historically been limited. These studies represent an exciting step forward in addressing a major unmet need in cardiovascular care.
