Amit V. Patel is a sleep medicine, pulmonary and critical care boarded physician who serves as Medical Director of the Virginia Heart Sleep Medicine program. Dr. Patel has a special interest in the physiology and practice of sleep medicine and has published research studies evaluating the efficacy of sleep apnea technologies. Additionally, he treats sleep disorders of all types ranging from sleep apnea and complex sleep patterns to insomnia and narcolepsy. “I feel that our overall health and quality of life are intricately tied to the quality of our sleep,” he said.
Dr. Patel completed medical training at the Northwestern University and his Internal Medicine residency at Georgetown University. He completed his Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine fellowships at the New York University. After completing his fellowships, he joined the faculty at the Weill-Cornell Medical School as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. He then practiced in Arlington, VA while also serving on clinical faculty at Georgetown University prior to working with the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical group. Dr. Patel joined Virginia Heart in December of 2018 where he is now devoted full time to the practice of sleep medicine.
Dr. Patel is very happy to be back working with the Northern Virginia Community. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his wife and young children, hiking, biking, cooking and playing charades.
