Basic Facts:

  • Technetium Pyrophosphate Study, also known as PYP Imaging, is a non-invasive diagnostic test for patients in whom there is suspected cardiac amyloidosis.
  • This test is done to help your physician determine a course of treatment.

There is no preparation required for the test. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. At the start of your appointment, a technologist will escort you to an exam room and start intravenous (IV) access. The IV line enables the technologist to administer the radioactive tracer that is required to obtain images. There are no side effects to the tracer, it is saline based.

Pictures are taken one hour after the injection, and occasionally again at three hours. The test can take anywhere from 2-4 hours.

There are no post-test restrictions. Your Virginia Heart Care Team will contact you with your results within four business days.
